NORDIC WALKING

IN SOUTH WALES

SO WHAT IS NORDIC WALKING?

When I tell people that I teach Nordic Walking
folk think that it is just a walk, but with two sticks
for balance or is trekking.

The major difference is that Nordic Walking
poles are designed to propel you forward.

Nordic Walking started as an offseason training
for cross country skiers when there was no snow.
The exercise mimics cross country skiing on snow
so that the legs and upper body are involved,
producing a full body workout.

Stephen Bond

“I am a qualified Nordic Walking Instructor and a member of British Nordic Walking (BNW) and the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA).
As a gentleman of a certain age I have always run, competitively and for pleasure. I have completed marathons, cross country events and some time ago I added Nordic Walking to my keep fit interests.
In my working life I was a career police officer and later an hotelier. I also have a current first aid certificate.
I assess all my walks before taking you out, for health and safety purposes, and as most of the walks are wholly or partially off road, I ensure that the routes and timings are carefully checked and appropriate for the group.
Clients range in age from 13 to 84 and have included those in coronary recovery and some with balance issues. I have also had clients in post-operative recovery or with special needs. Being a country boy, I love being outside and enjoy the countryside as well as the social aspect of Nordic Walking.”

WHEN AND WHERE?

Each week, on Monday, I send a text or WattsApp message to all walkers in the groups to give the exact location of the meeting point for the walk that week. Generally we walk:-

Tuesday 11am based in or around Cowbridge

Thursday 1pm in or around Bridgend or Porthcawl

Thursday 6.30pm in Llantwit Major

I am also able to arrange one to one, or Beginners Sessions, tailored to the clients availability, throughout the week.

(see Beginners page)

We occasionally organise a longer walk of two hours or so and you are sent information regarding these.  They are sometimes as a suggestion from someone in a group who has found a particularly beautiful walk who will want to share it with us.

British Nordic Walking organise events which may take us outside our area and Nordic Walkers of all abilities are welcome to go along.
